Solar Data Scientist –California location

Position Description: To meet global customer demand for our innovative software product line for solar asset management.  The person hired for this position will assist the Solar Center of Excellence (SolarCOE) team in developing industry leading solar data analytics algorithms, prototyping them in computer code, validating behavior using measured system performance data, and assisting the integration of new algorithm codes into robust software libraries used in  production-grade software as a service analytics platform. 

You will construct and fit statistical, machine learning, or optimization models, detect and analyze changes using vast power generation time-series datasets.  Your analysis will contribute to predictive and prescriptive failure analysis of solar power generation plants.

The position will require R&D-type investigative abilities, as well as an aptitude for translating new algorithmic concepts into commercially successful products.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or other quantitative field

  • 3-5 years of technical experience in distributed computing, machine learning, and statistics related work in a power-generation related field

  • Proficiency in statistical data analysis, data science, and/or machine learning techniques using time-series data

  • Proficiency with software programming using Python, C/C++, Java, Linux, and MySQL

  • Experience with open source big data technologies and platforms, including Hadoop, Yarn, Hive, HBASE

  • Experience with cluster computing frameworks such as MapReduce and Spark, and time series databases (InfluxDB, OpenTSDB, etc)

  • Excellent communication skills in English

  • Proven experience applying skills and knowledge to commercial purpose.

  • Strong curiosity and motivation for learning new solar technology systems, software techniques, and analytic methods in a dynamic international corporate context

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years work experience in the solar industry, ideally in a systems performance engineering role

  • Familiarity with solar systems modeling methods and tools, including sun position, irradiance transposition, module cover, thermal modeling, and inverter power systems

  • Familiarity with NREL’s SAM and PVsyst system performance models

  • 5+ years work experience in the solar industry, ideally in solar software for performance engineering applications

  • Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese

Travel: Occasional travel is required, nominally 4-5 trips per year depending on company needs.
