Director of Engineering

We are looking for a director of engineering to design, scale, and lead our engineering department. As the department head, you will report directly to the CEO and will be responsible for the repeated, on-time, high-quality execution from the engineering function. You will provide critical input in the product planning and development process and drive the conversation on relative prioritization and technology investment. The right candidate will be able to point the Engineering function in the right direction, in alignment with company strategy, and will possess a strong ability to balance both offense (new features, performance) and defense (reducing bug load, rewriting systems). Critically, the Director of Engineering will be responsible for establishing the engineering team culture - scaling the team and continued development of individuals on the team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee front-end and back-end development teams and their projects

  • Unblocks all issues for the engineering team, regularly identifies and weeds out time wasters, is able to get their hands dirty with a prototype or MVP.

  • Always thinking about how to deliver the value the customer can feel. Ships frequently and gets feedback. Lets the customer own the problem, but takes ownership of the solution.

  • Manage development projects by setting requirements, goals, and timelines - often cross-functionally.

  • Understands when to watch, when to delegate, when to coach - is able to coach the next engineering leaders within the organization.

  • Coordinate with external stakeholders for new integrations and tools.

  • Review and update policies relevant to internal systems and equipment.

  • Helps the team achieve such success that the company becomes a byword among engineers.

Requirements

  • Work experience as a director of engineering or in a similar senior-level position at an engineering department

  • Hands-on experience in back-end and front-end development. Has shipped code with different development processes.

  • Leadership abilities with a strategic mind. Has strong opinions but are willing to change their mind. Has a track record of running high morale / high output teams.

  • Excellent project management, documentation, and communication skills. Isn’t' afraid to ask tough questions and understand the importance of documentation and communication for organizational health.

  • Excellent at communicating upward, downward, and sideways. They need to manage the CEO, they need to communicate to the engineering team, they need to be able to talk to customers, the sales team, and the customer support team.
